What to wear guide

Engagement Style!

Hug, cuddle, laugh, hold hands, run, dance & repeat!

Let's go on an Adventure!

Where do you begin… I know it can feel kind of daunting to pick what to wear for your engagement photos. Here are a few guidelines I’ve put together so you guys can be sure to look hot while your cuddling and hugging each other and feel your best! So I will say I am not a fashionista by any means but I do like pulling looks together and know a thing or two about what looks good together on film. I have been doing this long enough to know the right outfits can pull the whole shoot together and just show off how great you guys can look! Let’s get started!

Come Prepared!

Come ready to go! Most of my couples bring two outfits they wear their dressy outfit first and then change in the car. Make sure to take everything out your pockets. Leave your phone in the car & put your keys in my bag.

Ultimately, I want you guys to be yourselves at this session, I want your personalities to shine through in the images. The most important thing to me is that you guys feel and look like yourselves, how you normally dress, is where we should start. A lot of people try to go shopping for new clothes for the shoot beforehand and I actually think that is great but I recommend getting clothing that makes you feel comfortable and wearing it few times before our session. I also encourage you to bring stuff you normally wear, stuff that’s already in your closet that you love and feel yourselves in. An old band t-shirt and ripped jeans? Perfect. A lot of my couples will go shopping for “nicer” looking clothes which is totally fine, but sometimes they regret not just wearing they feel like themselves in. Who cares if you look back at the photos in 20 years and laugh about what you’re wearing. As long as it represented what you guys are like right now, that’s all that matters. Plus, guys are usually not all that stoked about putting on a collared dry cleaned button up with dress shoes if they’re used to wearing flannels and boots every day. I have been married long enough to know this, and they will love you forever if you just let them be a bit more comfortable!

Props

Let's talk about Props!

Props can be super awesome and not at all like the ones that are all over Pinterest. Let's get creative and talk about what you like to do for instance I love to cycle so if you like that too you can bring your bikes! Other really awesome things... a campfire, your motorcycle, a beautiful bouquet of flowers, a floral crown (I know the best florists) your favorite Mexican blanket, a canoe, your favorite coffee, or and let's not forget the cutest prop your fur baby!!! Let's show everyone who you are!

PATTERNS
Avoid big, loud, chunky, crazy patterns. The smaller or more subtle, the better! If the pattern is too loud, it will distract from your faces. Flannels are always a yes in my book (probably because I love them and they are comfy)! I usually try to avoid pairing too many patterns together because, you guessed it, it makes the photos feel a little hectic and distracting from your faces and the location. Also, be sure to iron your clothes before so there are not huge wrinkles distracting from your faces either! Make sure the pattern fits with our scenery & location.

IN-HOME SESSIONS
All of the above applies, but for in-home sessions, I say the more skin showing the better! No that doesn’t mean you need to be borderline naked, I’m just saying the photos will look a lot more comfortable and intimate than if you're in lots of heavy layers! Cause let’s be real, most of us walk around without pants on at home anyways. I recommend bringing options of tank tops, shorts, sweaters, and jeans to mix and match! Anything that will show some skin is perf! Or if you wanna just wear a sweater with undies for a few or have your bae be shirtless, then heck yes to that.

Hair & Makeup

A lot of people ask me whether or not they should get your hair and makeup done by a pro. My answer is always “It is great trial run before your wedding day.” I think your Make up artist will appreciate working with you before the big day & a little bit of make- up and style hair always looks amazing in images. Keep in mind you might not want to be as glammed up as you will look on your wedding day a messy top knot can look great too!  But, if you want your hair and makeup done, then definitely do it, because the most important thing is that you feel confident like Beyonce always. If you’re getting hair and makeup done, I recommend you schedule to be done at least an hour before you have to leave for the shoot so you aren’t late. Also, if you’re whiter than toothpaste like me and want a spray tan, be sure to get a suuuuper natural airbrushed spray tan rather than one from a salon/tanning place. We don’t want you looking like an oompa loompa!
